To check fertility, both men and women undergo various types of tests and evaluations at a clinic. An infertility specialist works with couples to identify possible causes of fertility issues, such as decreased sperm count or fallopian tube blockage. They also offer suitable treatment options like in vitro fertilization (IVF). Here are some ways an infertility specialist evaluates fertility:

Ovarian Reserve Tests

By conducting ovarian reserve testing, an infertility specialist determines how many eggs are in the ovaries and their overall quality. Since the number and quality of eggs decline with age, this test helps doctors understand an individual’s fertility potential. Some physicians use ultrasound technology to count the small follicles and estimate the number of eggs remaining. If the results show a lower ovarian reserve, it might mean fewer eggs are available for fertilization, which can affect the chances of getting pregnant. After conducting ovarian reserve testing, a doctor may prescribe medication to stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs for fertility treatment.

Ultrasounds

A transvaginal ultrasound is a type of scan where a small device is placed inside the vagina to create images of the reproductive organs. This technique allows healthcare providers to detect structural issues, such as fibroids, polyps, or ovarian cysts, that may impact fertility. By visualizing the growth of ovarian follicles, the ultrasound helps predict ovulation timing. With detailed images, medical professionals can monitor responses to medications and determine when to proceed with egg retrieval for IVF cycles. An ultrasound also helps doctors assess the thickness of the uterine lining, which is key for embryo implantation.

Blood Tests

A fertility doctor may order blood tests to check hormone levels in women and confirm if ovulation has occurred. They also perform blood tests to measure follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels, which stimulate the growth of eggs in the ovaries. Additional tests can detect luteinizing hormone (LH), which promotes the release of eggs from the ovaries, resulting in ovulation. For men, blood tests assess testosterone levels to verify they are balanced enough to support sperm production. These tests also determine whether FSH levels are normal for stimulating sperm production.

Semen Analyses

During semen analysis, a doctor checks how many sperm are present in a sample of semen. This number is referred to as the sperm count. When the sperm count is high, it increases the chances of reaching and fertilizing an egg to attain pregnancy. Fertility professionals also measure sperm motility, which shows how well sperm moves to reach and fertilize an egg. The sperm should have an oval head and a long tail to penetrate and fertilize the egg. A fertility specialist checks sperm morphology to identify abnormal shape issues that may affect fertility.

Meet With an Infertility Specialist

Infertility specialists are trained to diagnose and treat reproductive health issues. They also have access to the latest diagnostic tools and reproductive technologies, such as IVF. These specialists can assist with the IVF process by conducting a pre-cycle evaluation, monitoring ovarian stimulation, performing egg retrieval, and facilitating fertilization. To receive infertility testing and see if IVF is an option for you, call a fertility clinic today to book an appointment.
